Soweto gained the world's attention on June 16, 1976 with the Soweto Uprising. Soweto is an urban area on the Southwest side of Johannesburg, South Africa. Its name is a syllabic abbreviation, short for "South Western Townships," subsequently referred to by relocating residents and other South Africans as "So Where To".
